ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Provide a healthy and safe environment that is conducive to positive learning, playing and growing
- Implement the planned curriculum and provide learning materials that are age and developmentally appropriate
- Plan, develop and supervise individual and group activities to stimulate growth in language, social, emotional and motor skills
- Provide direct care and assistance to children with their basic needs including eating, dressing, hand washing, toilet training and diaper changing
- Maintain standards of safety in all aspects of the program and understand and follow emergency procedures
- Interact with children frequently while showing interest, respect and affection regardless of race, gender, background or culture of children
- Encourage independence in children while teaching positive approaches to behaving constructively
- Assist children in dealing with emotions, positive and negative, while expecting them to behave in developmentally appropriate ways
- Maintain records and portfolios for all children to allow for regular and effective communication with parents
- Promote healthy meal and snack times as pleasant and social learning experiences
- Understand and follow policies and philosophies of Community Action, Community Kids Learning Centers and state licensing rules for child care centers
- Participate in all required meetings and trainings
- Meet state requirements for in-service training and continuing education
- Pursue professional development in early childhood education as recommended by the Program Manager or Director
- Assist or supervise in other classrooms or child care sites as required
- Assist with transportation of children as needed
- Complete related work as assigned within the scope of responsibility and skill required for the job

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for the supervision of the children under his/her care and any Assistants or Helpers/Volunteers in the classroom.
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma/GED required. Must complete a minimum of 25 hours of approved early childhood education training annually. The following guidelines based on education and experience are used to determine the placement of a teacher on the salary schedule:
Teacher I: Educational background or work experience in early childhood or elementary education is preferred. Any combination of education or experience will be considered.
Teacher II: Minimum of a one year child care diploma or one year of an AAS Degree in child care from an institution of higher learning or Child Development Associate Credential issued by the Council for Early Childhood Professional Recognition.
Teacher III: Licensed from DPI instruction to act as a pre-kindergarten or EC Exceptional Educational Needs teacher or 3 years of at least 36 credits from an institution of higher learning, including 2 approved courses for credit in ECE, or a Certificate from American Montessori Society or Association Montessori International or BS degree in ECE/Development or DPI License in Pre-K or related field and/or master degree in EC related field.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Must have good communication skills, including the ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to children, parents and staff. Bilingual in English and Spanish is highly desirable.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide with whole numbers, fractions and percentages.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Must be able to conduct smooth and unregimented transitions, be flexible and handle routine tasks in a relaxed and individualized manner.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: See Educational Qualifications. Teaching staff authorized to drive the childcare van must meet the driving standards in the Travel/Vehicle Usage Policy.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must be extremely reliable and dependable. Must have knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices and environmental ratings. Ability to communicate and work with parents, children, co-workers, managers and directors.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift a minimum of 20 pounds, ranging up to 50 pounds, depending on age of children. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Ability to be mobile on a variety of surfaces such as tile, carpet, wood chips, pea gravel, cement, etc.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally loud. The duties are usually performed within a classroom environment with daily time (if appropriate) outside in varied weather conditions, including heat, wind and cold.
